Man Beats Penile Cancer, Fulfills Fatherhood Dream

Steven Hamill, aged 33, bravely shares his experience after being diagnosed with penile cancer in April 2019. Initially treated for balanitis, his condition worsened significantly, leading to hospitalization and a diagnosis of advanced penile cancer that necessitated the removal of four inches of his penis. Despite fearing he would never realize his dream of fatherhood due to the surgery affecting his urethra, Steven is now cancer-free and the father of a four-year-old son.

He underwent treatment at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, where he had a circumcision followed by a partial penectomy. Although initially dismissed due to his young age, his symptoms—including swelling, intense pain, and a severe odor—eventually led to the correct diagnosis. Around 700 men in Britain are diagnosed with penile cancer annually, with many cases linked to preventable risk factors like HPV infection and smoking. Early detection is key, with over 90% survival rates for those diagnosed promptly.

Steven is raising awareness to encourage men not to delay seeking medical help for unusual symptoms, emphasizing that penile cancer can affect individuals of any age. He acknowledges the psychological impact of his diagnosis and treatment but highlights his successful recovery and ability to father a child. His message is a powerful call to action for men to overcome embarrassment and seek timely medical evaluation for any concerning genital health issues.
