A recent survey indicates positive trends in youth health across Prince Edward Island. The COMPASS survey, involving students in grades seven through 12, shows a notable decrease in substance use. Cigarette consumption has fallen to five percent, down from previous years. Vaping also saw a reduction, with 10 percent of students reporting its use.
Further positive developments include a near halving of cannabis use among P.E.I. students, now at six percent. Binge drinking has also decreased to 12 percent. The survey, conducted across 33 schools, also highlighted a drop in reported bullying incidents to 24 percent, down from 30 percent two years ago. Mental health and a sense of belonging remain strong among students, though these indicators showed a slight decline in older students.
Improvements were also observed in dietary habits, with daily fruit and vegetable consumption rising. Physical activity and sleep guidelines are being met by a larger proportion of students. However, only a small percentage of students adhere to recommended screen time limits.
