A study conducted over four months revealed that individuals aged 60 to 75 who ate approximately 60 peanuts daily experienced an increase in global cerebral blood flow. This improvement in blood flow to key brain areas is associated with enhanced memory functions, particularly the ability to recall information.
The research, conducted at Maastricht University Medical Centre, also noted that the participants’ blood pressure showed a positive trend, dropping during the study period. These findings are particularly significant as age-related decline in blood vessel function can increase the risk of cognitive impairments like dementia. The study highlights the potential of dietary interventions in maintaining brain health.
Researchers attribute these advantages to the nutritional profile of peanuts, especially those with skins, which are rich in fiber and antioxidants. Previous studies by the same group have shown similar benefits from soy nuts and mixed nuts, reinforcing the idea that certain nut varieties can positively impact brain circulation. The observed increase in global cerebral blood flow is considered a vital marker of vascular brain health.
