PCOS Renamed PMOS: A Whole-Body Health Shift
26 May
Summary
- Polycystic ovary syndrome is now polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.
- The name change aims for broader understanding of the condition.
- Experts emphasize PCOS/PMOS is a full-body, not just ovarian, issue.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been officially renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) on May 12, a change supported by health experts in Jersey. This rebranding aims to more accurately reflect the condition as a systemic, whole-body issue, moving beyond its previous focus on the ovaries. Jessica Pinel, chair of PCOS Jersey, stated that the former name limited understanding, whereas PMOS acknowledges the broad range of symptoms affecting women, including fatigue, acne, and infertility.
Dr. Jessica Langtree-Marsh, a Jersey GP, emphasized that PMOS is significantly under-researched and misunderstood, often overlooked until women seek fertility treatment. She advocates for a lifespan approach to managing the condition, suggesting the name change could encourage wider treatment options beyond contraceptive pills to include metabolic medications. The condition was first identified 70 years ago and has undergone name changes previously, from Stein-Leventhal Syndrome to PCOS, before the current rebranding to PMOS.
