Summary
- Young patient died after cancer spread following unnecessary surgery.
- Inquest heard diagnosis delays and inappropriate treatment occurred.
- Husband claims wife was 'failed at every touchpoint' by surgeon.

A devastating inquest has heard that Tracey Taylor, a 29-year-old patient of jailed surgeon Ian Paterson, was "failed at every touchpoint" during her cancer treatment. Ms. Taylor died in December 1999 after breast cancer, initially diagnosed following Paterson's surgery in 1998, returned and spread. Her husband's statement to the coroner detailed a series of medical missteps.
Paterson, serving 20 years for unnecessary and botched operations, appeared via video link, requesting to limit his inquest attendance due to health reasons. The inquest revealed Ms. Taylor's concerns about a breast lump, initially misdiagnosed as benign by her GP and another doctor before Paterson's intervention.
Further concerns arose when a biopsy sample was unusable, yet not repeated, delaying cancer detection. Paterson performed a local excision despite the cancer being grade three and lymph nodes being involved, against Ms. Taylor's wishes for a mastectomy. A radiologist's note indicated Paterson had avoided disclosing the full extent of her cancer.
Despite a mastectomy and reconstruction, Ms. Taylor's condition worsened. Medical experts noted general failures to investigate the lump urgently, a four-month delay in treatment, and the omission of radiotherapy. She passed away in December 1999, with her husband remembering her as a vibrant woman denied the chance to have children.
