Pastor Dies After Hospital Error
16 Jul
Summary
- E. coli diagnosis was missed by hospital lab.
- Pastor Sayles died after receiving ineffective treatment.
- Family seeks minimum $1 million in damages.

Bishop Jonathan Sayles, a father-of-six and Texas pastor, died in October 2024 after a critical communication error at Houston's Kingwood hospital. Initially admitted in July 2024 for what he believed was pneumonia, Sayles underwent tests that revealed a rare, antibiotic-resistant E. coli infection in his lungs.
Despite the positive lab results for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase E. coli, the hospital failed to inform Sayles, his family, or his treating physicians. He was discharged with an oral antibiotic ineffective against the infection, allowing it to progress.
This oversight led to a series of severe hospitalizations over several months. It was not until August 2024 that a specialist identified the untreated infection, noting the incorrect initial treatment and lack of follow-up.
The family's lawsuit alleges the hospital breached its duty to communicate critical lab results, directly causing Sayles's condition to worsen and ultimately leading to his death. They are seeking a minimum of $1 million in damages.
