Parasite Outbreak: Woman Camped in Bathroom
14 Jul
Summary
- Ohio woman experienced violent diarrhea and cramping for days.
- She was eventually diagnosed with cyclosporiasis and a secondary infection.
- Cyclospora cases are rising nationwide, source still unknown.

An Ohio resident recently detailed her harrowing experience battling a severe outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness causing intense gastrointestinal distress. The woman described her symptoms as "violent diarrhea" and "severe abdominal cramping," which led her to be "camped out in the bathroom" for extended periods.
Her illness began after consuming a salad at a local restaurant. Although she initially felt some improvement, her symptoms returned with a vengeance, preventing her from eating solid foods for over a week. Doctors later confirmed she had cyclosporiasis and developed a secondary infection affecting her liver.
This prolonged sickness left her severely fatigued, highlighting the illness's debilitating effects. Nearly three weeks after falling ill, she was still recovering and advised others with similar symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
Nationwide, cases of cyclosporiasis are on the rise, with over 4,000 individuals reported sickened. Health officials are actively investigating the source, suspecting contaminated raw produce such as bagged salads, herbs, berries, or green onions, and urging thorough washing of all fruits and vegetables.
