Summary
- Untreated tapeworm infections can lead to neurocysticercosis and seizures.
- Her prolonged treatment caused severe anxiety, paranoia, and depression.
- She is now creating a podcast to help others with similar experiences.
A severe tapeworm infection left one woman battling neurocysticercosis, a debilitating condition affecting her central nervous system and causing seizures. The prolonged and complex treatment regimen, which included steroids and various anti-parasitic medications, led to significant mental health challenges. She experienced intense anxiety, paranoia, and depression, forcing her to give up her job and move home for care.
The mental toll of her illness and treatment was profound, resulting in a three-month admission to a neuropsychiatric ward in September 2016. Doctors prescribed mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics alongside her existing medication. She found it difficult to ascertain if her severe symptoms were directly from the parasites or a result of the trauma from her prolonged illness.
Now in her 40s, she is channeling her experiences into a positive initiative. She plans to release a 12-part podcast featuring interviews with medical experts. This project aims to support individuals facing similar ordeals and transform her past suffering into a source of help for others. A Crowdfunder campaign is underway to raise £25,000 for the podcast's launch.
