In a shocking case of medical neglect, Cheryll Rich, a 38-year-old woman who was paralyzed in a freak accident, was forced to endure days of horrific treatment at Basildon University Hospital last September.
Rich broke her back after tumbling into a canal lock while supporting her partner's fundraising kayak trip. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency spinal surgery, but her nightmare only began when she was transferred to the "notorious" Linford Ward to recover.
According to Rich, the hospital staff "dehumanized" her, refusing to wash her, change her soiled hospital gowns, or even provide her with fresh water for five days. Her desperate cries for help were met with indifference, as staff allegedly "rolled their eyes" and treated her roughly when they did attend to her.
Rich's partner, Jack Barnes, was forced to step in and clean the mess off his stricken lover himself after a staff member simply handed him a bowl of water and told him to "go do it." The ordeal left Barnes in "floods of tears," as he was powerless to alleviate Rich's suffering.
The hospital's director of nursing has since issued an apology to Rich for the "distress" and "unacceptable" treatment she received. However, Rich says no staff members have been formally punished for their actions, which she described as "shocking." She fears that without accountability, the abuse could continue, and someone may even lose their life.
Despite the trauma, Rich's resilience shines through. She is determined to speak out and ensure that no one else has to endure the same dehumanizing experience she faced while under the care of the Basildon University Hospital.
