5 Jul
Summary
- Two rare Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases reported in Panvel last month.
- Mayor Nitin Patil urged residents to report contaminated water supplies.
- PCMC is collecting water samples and running an awareness drive.
In response to two confirmed cases of the rare Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) within the past month, Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Mayor Nitin Patil has issued an appeal for citizens to report any instances of contaminated water supply. The municipal corporation has launched an awareness drive and is actively collecting water samples from suspected areas.
The two GBS patients were admitted to Aadhar Multispecialty Hospital in Panvel. A 40-year-old male patient, admitted on June 6, experienced weakness and was discharged on June 15. Separately, a 71-year-old female patient from Konkan, who had recently completed a Chardham journey, presented with fever and weakness starting June 16 and developed numbness in her extremities by June 24.
GBS is a serious autoimmune disorder that can be triggered by preceding viral or bacterial infections, often linked to consuming contaminated water or outside food. Mayor Patil emphasized the critical need for citizens to check the quality of potable water before consumption, particularly as the monsoon season, a period when infectious diseases spread rapidly, is beginning. He urged residents to remain cautious during this time.
