Pancreatic Cancer: Deadly Delay in Diagnosis
16 Feb
Summary
- Andrzej Bielecki battled symptoms for four years before diagnosis.
- Doctors initially dismissed symptoms as indigestion and a hiatus hernia.
- He was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer six weeks before death.

Andrzej Bielecki's family is advocating for greater awareness of pancreatic cancer, a disease that was diagnosed only six weeks before his passing at age 58. For four years, Mr. Bielecki experienced symptoms such as acid reflux and indigestion, which were initially treated with over-the-counter remedies. By August 2022, a persistent stomach ache added to his discomfort.
Despite numerous doctor visits, his condition was misdiagnosed. An endoscopy revealed a hiatus hernia, and subsequent tests showed a blocked bile duct and jaundice. It wasn't until January 9, 2023, that he received a diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer. The family highlights the critical delay in diagnosis, noting that earlier detection could have allowed Mr. Bielecki more time to pursue his passions.
Pancreatic cancer is the 10th most common cancer in the UK, with approximately 10,800 new cases annually. Its deep location and small size make early detection challenging, with many cases diagnosed at later stages when treatment options are limited. Mr. Bielecki passed away in February 2023, after spending his final weeks with loved ones.
