Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) observed World Hospice and Palliative Care Day with a unique 'run and ride for dignity' event. The Manipal Hospice and Respite Centre (MHRC), a unit of MAHE, organized the cycling and running initiative.
The event aimed to raise community awareness that every person facing a serious or life-limiting illness deserves to live with comfort and dignity until the end. It sought to emphasize that palliative care improves quality of life. The theme for this year was 'Pain Management: An Essential Part of Palliative Care.'
Maj. Gen. Mathews Jacob, MAHE's pro vice-chancellor, Health Sciences, flagged off the 68 km cycle ride from Mangaluru to MHRC. Sudhakar Kantipudi and Seema Rao flagged off the run from Coin Circle, Manipal.
Around 150 cyclists and 150 runners participated in these events. MHRC clarified that palliative care is not about ceasing treatment but about enhancing the patient's final months, addressing pain, and alleviating emotional, social, and spiritual suffering for patients and their families.
