Kids' TB & Cancer Drugs Vanish: Health Crisis Deepens
27 Mar
Summary
- Essential pediatric TB and cancer drugs are critically scarce.
- Patients resort to smuggled, unregulated drugs due to shortages.
- Authorities urged to urgently restore drug supply chains.
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has issued a stark warning regarding a critical shortage of essential pediatric tuberculosis (TB) and cancer medications, describing the escalating humanitarian crisis. According to Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro of the PMA, this scarcity poses significant risks, including the development of drug-resistant TB in children and the potential spread within families.
Many patients, particularly those treated by private practitioners, are struggling to access necessary treatments as these drugs are not being adequately supplied. The situation is dire for cancer patients who are increasingly forced to procure unregulated and potentially counterfeit medicines from illicit sources. This reliance on substandard drugs compromises patient safety and undermines the efforts of oncologists.
The PMA attributes the scarcity to institutional negligence and a lack of proactive planning by regulatory authorities. They demand immediate governmental intervention, including importing modern cancer therapies and providing subsidies, while also calling for accountability for officials responsible for the administrative failures that have disrupted the supply chain.
Officials from the TB Control Programme have cited "geopolitical" reasons for delays in foreign-donated supplies. However, they claim that recent shipments have arrived and distribution is underway, asserting that shortages at the facility level have been mitigated. Investigations into the exact causes of the prolonged disruption are ongoing.
