Ozempic Reigns Supreme in Diabetes Heart Study
29 Sep
Summary
- Ozempic showed a 6% lower cardiovascular event risk.
- Study compared escalated Ozempic dose to Mounjaro.
- Findings presented at European diabetes meeting.

Adults with type 2 diabetes who escalated their Ozempic dosage demonstrated a lower risk of major cardiovascular events. A real-world study revealed a statistically significant 6% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events for patients increasing their Ozempic dose to 2 milligrams (mg) from 1 mg, compared to those switching to Mounjaro up to 15 mg.
These findings were shared at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting held in Milan, Italy. The analysis, involving 636,525 adults, indicated that a substantial portion of patients remained on Ozempic 1 mg within a year of their initial prescription, while others escalated their dose or switched to Mounjaro.
Michael Radin, executive medical director at Novo Nordisk, highlighted that these real-world results can offer insights into how intensifying treatment strategies may influence cardiovascular outcomes, a critical aspect of patient management. This research builds upon prior analyses of the same data that focused on HbA1c levels and weight reduction.
