Ottawa Hospital Slashes Job Cuts Dramatically

The Ottawa Hospital has substantially reduced the number of involuntary job cuts it initially planned for its workforce. In April, the hospital announced measures to address budget pressures, which included cuts to around 400 positions. As of September 2026, spokesperson Michaela Schreiter confirmed that involuntary departures have been limited to just 17 employees, representing a minimal 0.15% of the overall workforce.
This significant reduction in job cuts was achieved through strategic initiatives such as vacancy management and offering early retirement options to staff. The Ottawa Hospital has been actively working with the Ontario government to navigate the financial challenges impacting the health-care sector.
Other healthcare facilities in the region have also implemented workforce reductions. Queensway Carleton Hospital announced 119 position cuts in July, including 87 registered nursing jobs, to manage financial pressures. Bruyère Health also reported that 46 personal care attendant and nine registered practical nurse positions would be affected by a redeployment process, which could involve transfers or potential layoffs.
