Orkney Maternity Care Shines: Inspectors Praise Balfour Hospital
2 Jul
Summary
- Maternity care at Orkney's Balfour hospital received high praise from inspectors.
- Inspectors highlighted 12 strengths, including compassionate and family-focused care.
- Areas for improvement noted were staff training time and timely adverse event reviews.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland inspectors have issued a positive report on the maternity care services at Orkney's Balfour hospital. The unannounced visit in March highlighted significant strengths within the rural Kirkwall facility, which recorded 100 local births in 2025.
Twelve key strengths were identified, with inspectors specifically noting the "compassionate" and "family-focused" approach of the staff. The maternity ward itself was described as clean, organized, and maintained to a high standard. Positive observations included evident good teamwork among obstetricians, midwives, and support staff, as well as visible and supportive senior leadership.
However, the report also pointed out areas needing attention. These included the need to provide staff with protected time for training and to ensure a more timely review process for any adverse events that occur. In 2025, the hospital saw 54 urgent transfers to mainland Scotland, an increase from 45 in 2020.
The health board welcomed the findings and has committed to implementing the recommended improvements. NHS Orkney stated that a comprehensive action plan is already in development to build on the identified strengths while enhancing safety, governance, and staff support.
