19 Oct
Summary
- Audree Descheneaux received a life-saving liver transplant 23 years ago.
- Her current liver is 111 years old, including the donor's age.
- The Chain of Life Challenge raises awareness and funds for organ donation.
Participants in Quebec hiked mountains on Sunday for the Chain of Life Challenge, aiming to raise awareness for organ donation. In Montreal, Audree Descheneaux, who received a life-saving liver transplant as a teenager 23 years ago, was among those who ascended Mont Royal.
Descheneaux's liver, from a donor who was 88 at the time of his death, means her organ is now 111 years old. She actively debunks myths, stating, "You're never too old to be a donor." Her daughter, Olivia Blyth, also participated, emphasizing the profound impact of donations.
The Chain of Life organization, which supports the event, conducts programs in high schools to educate students on organ donation, addressing its complexities across ethical, cultural, and religious dimensions. The organization notes that becoming an organ donor is rare, with only 196 donors in Quebec last year out of over 80,000 deaths, underscoring the importance of each consent.
Descheneaux expressed deep gratitude for her second chance, having returned to nursing school, raised a family, and living life to the fullest.
