Oregon Urges Mpox Shots Amid Serious Strain Spread
10 Jul
Summary
- Oregon officials urge high-risk groups to get vaccinated against mpox.
- A more serious clade I mpox strain is increasing globally.
- Vaccination is free for Oregon Health Plan members and covered by insurance.

Oregon public health officials are strongly encouraging those most vulnerable to mpox to receive vaccinations promptly. This recommendation comes as a more severe type of the virus, clade I mpox, sees increasing community transmission globally, particularly in western Europe and parts of Africa.
In Oregon, mpox cases have disproportionately affected individuals in Multnomah County, adults aged 30 to 39, and members of Hispanic and Black/African American communities. While most cases have been among men who have sex with men, health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination for all attendees of summer and fall events where close contact may occur.
Mpox primarily spreads through skin-to-skin contact, often during intimate or sexual contact. The JYNNEOS vaccine is highly effective and administered in two doses. For those who have completed the vaccine series or previously recovered from mpox, further vaccination is not recommended. The vaccine is accessible via healthcare providers and pharmacies, with costs covered for Oregon Health Plan members and those with commercial insurance.
