Measles Surges: Oregon Sees Alarming Rise
4 Apr
Summary
- Three new measles exposure sites identified in Gresham, West Linn, and Portland.
- Measles detected in wastewater signals a wider spread than reported cases.
- Oregon's vaccine rates are declining, contributing to the rise in cases.

Oregon is experiencing a significant increase in measles cases, prompting public concern and altered consumer habits. Health officials have confirmed three new locations with measles exposure: restaurants Pho.com in Gresham and Lark Cafe in West Linn, and a Safeway grocery store on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard in Portland.
These new sites highlight the growing threat, with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) confirming 13 cases so far this year. State Health Officer Dr. Dean Sidelinger noted that measles is being detected in wastewater in counties without reported cases, indicating a much broader spread throughout the state.
The OHA attributes the rise, in part, to declining vaccination rates. Experts predict that the total number of cases in 2026 will likely exceed previous years' records. While the measles vaccine is highly effective, a decrease in immunization coverage leaves more individuals vulnerable. Officials are urging vigilance and encouraging vaccination to combat the escalating outbreak.
