Oral cancer is alarmingly becoming the third most prevalent cancer among women in India. Madhumita Das, 65, experienced a life-altering ordeal when a neglected tumor in her lower jawbone grew to consume the bone and disfigure her face. Her case illustrates the severe consequences of poor oral hygiene and delayed medical attention, which can significantly aggravate oral tumors, even those initially classified as non-cancerous.
Initially, in the mid-2000s, a tumor was removed from Madhumita's jaw in Kanpur. However, over a decade later, a recurrent swelling appeared. Despite noticing its growth, she concealed it due to a generational aversion to burdening her children or undergoing further surgery. By early 2024, the tumor had rapidly enlarged, necessitating immediate oncological intervention.
In November 2024, surgeons at AIIMS Delhi successfully removed the tumor and reconstructed her jaw using a fibula graft from her leg. This complex procedure included plastic surgery for facial reconstruction. Madhumita is now recovering, adhering to a strict oral hygiene routine and a modified diet, a testament to the importance of early detection and specialized oral cancer care.
