Oral Cancer Surges: Lifestyle Habits Fueling Rise

Lifestyle shifts are altering disease patterns, with oral cavity cancer now competing with breast cancer in India. Oncologists note that factors such as long work hours, stress, and poor diet contribute to the rise of cancers once considered rare. Oral cavity cancer has become a significant concern, with some regions reporting numbers comparable to or exceeding breast cancer cases.

While overall numbers are high, gender-specific data shows oral cancer is the most common in males, with 143,000 new cases annually and a 1:6 male-to-female ratio. Breast cancer, conversely, affects predominantly females, with approximately 192,000 new cases yearly. This distinction highlights a crucial public health issue in India.

Preventable habits like tobacco and areca nut chewing, alongside alcohol consumption and poor oral hygiene, directly impact mouth lining health, increasing abnormal cell growth risk. Unlike breast cancer, influenced by biological factors, oral cavity cancer is largely lifestyle-driven, making it highly preventable with greater awareness and intervention.

Early signs, including small, painless mouth sores or white patches, are frequently dismissed or self-treated, as normal eating and speaking mask urgency. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol, maintaining oral hygiene, staying active, and seeking prompt evaluation for persistent mouth changes are vital for risk reduction. Early detection and lifestyle adjustments can significantly curb the progression of oral cavity cancer.
