Mental Health Center Gets Long-Overdue Upgrade

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan recently conducted a surprise inspection of the Govt Mental Health Centre in Peroorkada, T'puram, to assess its infrastructure and patient care. His visit focused on the progress of long-pending construction projects, particularly two hospital buildings that have remained unfinished for 22 years. The Minister emphasized the need to shift patients to improved facilities, creating a more dignified environment.

During the inspection on Monday, the Minister also addressed the delay in internal road network construction on the hospital campus, despite tender completion. An agreement with the contractor is expected within two weeks, followed by the commencement of work. He instructed officials to expedite administrative approvals for the stalled buildings and urged the hospital to submit proposals for filling essential support staff vacancies, including attendants and cooks.

Furthermore, the Minister pledged full implementation of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, to enhance the patient-friendly environment. Assurances were given regarding regular medicine availability and addressing the deteriorating condition of existing structures. Rehabilitation programs will be introduced for recovered patients to aid societal reintegration, and cooperative patients will be allowed supervised time in open areas.
