Andhra Pradesh Detects New Omicron RF.5 COVID Subvariant

Nearly three weeks after the initial COVID-19 case, Andhra Pradesh officials confirmed the detection of the Omicron RF.5 sublineage. Genome sequencing of samples identified this Omicron subvariant, according to a recent official release.
This RF.5 variant has been observed in higher numbers in Southeast Asian countries like Singapore. Health officials stated that current scientific evidence does not suggest it is more dangerous than other Omicron sublineages.
Symptoms commonly associated with the RF.5 variant include sore throat, cough, fever, and body aches, mirroring those of other Omicron subvariants. The State Health Minister reviewed preparedness measures, confirming hospitals are equipped and testing supplies are adequate.
COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh remain sporadic. Between June 26 and July 19, 19 cases were reported, including three on Sunday from Guntur and Visakhapatnam districts. One patient from Visakhapatnam is stable and hospitalized.
