Millions on Omeprazole: Study questions necessity
26 May
Summary
- Many acid reflux sufferers may not have the condition.
- Stopping Omeprazole suddenly can worsen symptoms.
- Long-term use carries a small increased risk of infection.

Millions worldwide rely on Omeprazole for acid reflux relief, but a recent study has sparked debate about its necessity and long-term implications. The research indicates that a significant number of individuals diagnosed with acid reflux might not actually have the condition, potentially leading to unnecessary medication use.
However, Dr. Xand has urged caution against abruptly stopping Omeprazole based on this study alone. He highlighted methodological concerns, including a limited participant group and the study's lack of peer review. Abruptly discontinuing the medication could lead to a rebound effect, causing an overproduction of acid and exacerbating symptoms.
Despite potential concerns, Dr. Xand emphasized that Omeprazole is an extremely safe and widely used medication. While acknowledging a very small increased risk of gut infections (0.4 percent) associated with its long-term use, he stated that the benefits, such as preventing dangerous bleeds, often outweigh this risk. He advised regular medical reviews for individuals on long-term prescriptions and recommended consulting a doctor before discontinuing the medication.
