Weight Loss Jabs Fuel Offshore Worker Job Hopes
29 Oct
Summary
- Offshore workers use weight loss jabs to meet new 124kg limit.
- New safety rules mandate weight below 124kg for helicopter evacuations.
- Union fears policy may allow unfair dismissals without compensation.

Offshore workers are actively seeking weight loss solutions, including GLP-1 jabs, to meet a new 124kg weight restriction. This updated guideline, effective November, is a safety measure for helicopter evacuations during emergencies. Trade body OEUK reports a substantial reduction in workers exceeding the limit since the policy's 2025 announcement.
While many workers have successfully met the new weight requirement, an estimated 241-300 individuals may still be over the limit. These workers could face job loss or reassignment to onshore positions. OEUK emphasizes that weight loss jabs are one of several measures, not a sole solution.
Past industry accommodations included larger lifeboats and specific seating arrangements on helicopters. However, OEUK states these only addressed symptoms. The 124kg limit aims to enhance safety across all life-saving equipment and reduce health-related medical evacuations, which were 78% of all medivacs in 2025.
The RMT union has voiced concerns, suggesting the policy could serve as a pretext for employers to dismiss workers without due process or compensation, urging OEUK to withdraw the policy and consult unions.
