Odisha Teens' Pregnancy Rate Dips, But Disparities Remain
13 Sep
Summary
- Odisha's teenage pregnancy rate declined to 6.5% from 7.5%.
- Tribal districts show concerning increases in teenage motherhood.
- Education and awareness link to lower rates in urban areas.
Odisha has observed a 1% decrease in teenage motherhood and pregnancy, with the proportion of girls aged 15-19 who are mothers or pregnant now at 6.5%, down from 7.5% in the previous survey. This overall improvement masks stark district-level variations, with tribal and interior regions continuing to face significant challenges. Districts such as Ganjam and Cuttack have shown substantial declines, reporting some of the lowest percentages in the state. In contrast, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Malkangiri, which are predominantly tribal, are grappling with the highest rates of adolescent pregnancy.
The persistence of high teenage pregnancy rates in tribal areas points to ongoing issues such as child marriage, lower educational attainment, and reduced access to reproductive health information. For instance, Keonjhar saw an increase from 12.2% to 15%. Experts emphasize that improving female education, increasing internet access, and enhancing reproductive health awareness are vital. Reducing child marriage and ensuring girls remain in school are critical steps for Odisha to achieve further reductions in teenage pregnancy rates across all its districts.
