10 Aug
Summary
- Vivek Saxena lost nearly 50 kg after bariatric surgery at AIIMS.
- He was previously inoperable due to extreme obesity and health issues.
- The surgery has enabled him to pursue long-held academic goals.

Vivek Saxena, a 32-year-old man, has undergone a remarkable transformation after bariatric surgery at AIIMS Delhi, reducing his weight from 209 kg to approximately 160 kg. For years, his extreme obesity severely limited his mobility and breathing, necessitating a tracheostomy for survival. His journey began after a depression diagnosis at 19, leading to significant weight gain.
Upon arrival at AIIMS on June 16, Vivek's BMI was 74 kg/m², accompanied by multiple health issues including hypertension and severe sleep apnoea. A multidisciplinary team implemented an intensive 32-day pre-surgery protocol involving a very-low-calorie diet, reducing his weight to 172 kg and making him operable.
On July 24, Vivek underwent the two-hour bariatric surgery, a procedure described as a 'multidisciplinary rescue strategy.' Post-surgery, his recovery was swift, and by his discharge on August 6, he had lost nearly 50 kg. This case highlights the success of preoperative optimization in managing extreme obesity, demonstrating that it is not a contraindication for surgery when handled by experienced teams.
Dr. Manjunath Maruti Pol emphasizes that obesity is a complex disease involving biology and environment, not just a lack of discipline. He notes that while India needs more bariatric procedures, the goal of metabolic surgery is improved health, not just weight loss. Vivek is now pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce and aspiring to complete an LLB, no longer breathless and looking forward to his future.
