New York City has recorded its first case of Clade I mpox, the more virulent strain of the virus. This marks the twelfth instance of Clade I mpox in the United States since November 2024. The affected individual, whose identity is being protected, recently returned to New York City after traveling in Europe. Health officials have confirmed that the patient is isolated and that there is no current evidence of community transmission, assessing the risk to the public as low. This development comes amid an increase in Clade Ib cases in Europe, with countries like Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal having reported local transmissions.
Clade I mpox is known for its higher mortality rate and more severe symptoms compared to Clade II, which has been circulating in New York City since the 2022 global outbreak. From January 1 to March 10, 2026, New York City documented 45 mpox cases, with 16 occurring in the past month alone. The virus can spread through close physical contact, including respiratory droplets, direct contact with rashes or bodily fluids, and contaminated items. Vaccination, particularly the JYNNEOS vaccine, is highly recommended for individuals at risk, including men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and those planning travel to areas with mpox outbreaks. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, fatigue, and a progressing rash.
