14 Mar
Summary
- New York City records its first case of mpox clade I.
- Clade I of mpox is known to be more severe and deadly.
- Health officials confirm no local transmission, risk remains low.

New York City health officials announced Friday the detection of the first case of mpox clade I within the city. This specific strain is recognized for its potential to cause more severe illness and higher mortality rates compared to other mpox variants.
The confirmed case involves an individual who recently traveled internationally to Europe. This person is currently isolating and will remain so until their symptoms subside. Health officials have emphasized that this diagnosis does not indicate any local transmission within New York City.
While the risk to New Yorkers is considered low, the city's Health Department is advising individuals at higher risk for mpox to get vaccinated. Those who have previously contracted mpox do not need to seek vaccination.
High-risk groups include men who have sex with men, and individuals who identify as trans, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming. Vaccination is also encouraged for those planning travel to regions with active mpox outbreaks and anticipating sexual activity with new partners. This case is the 12th diagnosis of mpox clade I recorded in the United States.
