This proactive measure involved cleaning and disinfecting cooling towers in 76 buildings that initially tested positive, a strategy New York City implemented for the first time.
This outbreak follows a similar event in Central Harlem between July and August 2025, which led to 90 hospitalizations and seven fatalities. The current remediation efforts on the Upper East Side were completed by July 16, 2026, with all 76 buildings finishing the required disinfection of their cooling systems.
