In a significant public health update, the New York City Health Department revealed that 34 cooling towers across 33 buildings on the Upper East Side tested positive for live Legionella bacteria. These findings are connected to a cluster of 82 Legionnaires' disease cases, which has tragically resulted in five deaths. Officials have confirmed that remediation efforts, including thorough cleaning and disinfection, have been completed at all buildings with positive test results.

The department is awaiting results for an additional 140 cooling towers, with further updates expected. While these positive tests indicate the presence of bacteria at the time of testing, they may or may not be the definitive source of the outbreak in the 10028, 10075, and 10128 ZIP code areas. Encouragingly, no new cases have been diagnosed in six days, and no new symptoms have been reported in over ten days, suggesting the outbreak's source has likely been addressed.

Authorities emphasize that anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms after spending time in the impacted neighborhoods should seek immediate medical attention. As of the latest report, eight individuals remain hospitalized, while 56 have been discharged, and 13 did not require hospitalization.
