17 Mar

- Clade I mpox strain is more severe and potentially life-threatening.
- The infected patient had recently traveled internationally.

New York City has identified its first case of mpox Clade I, a more severe strain of the virus. This particular strain has been linked to recent international travel, and health officials emphasize that there is no current local transmission within the city. Clade I is known for causing more dangerous symptoms and has a higher fatality rate compared to Clade II, the strain responsible for the 2022 global outbreak.
According to health advisories, the risk to New York City residents remains low. However, the NYC Health Department is recommending that individuals at higher risk for mpox receive the complete two-dose vaccine series. This includes specific recommendations for men who are gay, bisexual, or have sex with men, as well as those planning to travel to areas where Clade I is actively spreading.
The JYNNEOS vaccine, administered in two doses, is the primary method of protection and can reduce infection chances and symptom severity. Individuals who have recently been in close contact with an infected person are advised to get vaccinated within 14 days of exposure. For severe cases, treatment may involve supportive care and the antiviral medication TPOXX.
