N.W.T. Pharmacists Set for Major Prescription Powers

These expanded services could address conditions such as heartburn, urinary tract infections, migraines, and dry eye. Pharmacists might also support patients with chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, particularly when access to primary care prescribers is limited.
The proposed changes also encompass the administration of routine vaccinations by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. This initiative follows similar regulatory shifts in the Yukon, where pharmacists already have prescribing authority for minor ailments.
Legislation drafting for these changes has been ongoing since the summer of 2024, with public engagement concluding that December. While the updated legislation could be introduced as early as October, the target date for these new services to become available is spring 2027.
