14 Dec
Summary
- A hospital nurse underwent a mastectomy with reconstruction.
- Her cancer diagnosis came days before her mother's funeral.
- Colleagues provided crucial support during her recovery.

A senior sister at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Kerry Noble, described the profound impact of her own mastectomy, a procedure she had witnessed many times professionally. Diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine mammogram in 2023, the news arrived days before her mother's unexpected funeral, adding to her distress.
Noble, 58, who is from Broadstairs, underwent a mastectomy with reconstruction, experiencing complications. She emphasized the exceptional support she received from three colleagues, who assisted with daily care during her recovery. This personal network was instrumental in her ability to cope.
Having taken eight months off work, Ms. Noble has since adapted her role and become an advocate, openly sharing her experience. While acknowledging the difficulty and that she is not the same person she was, she looks forward to enjoying new adventures and her new grandson.
