Janet Harley, a dedicated midwifery support worker, has retired after an exceptional 66-year career with the National Health Service (NHS).
Her colleagues at Hull Women and Children's Hospital organized a surprise party to honor her long service. Janet, 83, expressed her deep affection for her job, particularly highlighting the teamwork and the privilege of caring for mothers and babies throughout her extensive tenure.
Her career commenced with nurse training in Perthshire, Scotland, in 1959. After moving with her husband, Robert, to Hampshire, she began working in maternity services. The couple's subsequent relocation to East Yorkshire led Janet to work at Beverley Westwood Hospital and later at Castle Hill Hospital before the service moved to the purpose-built Hull Women and Children's Hospital in 2003.
During her decades of service, Janet contributed to the labour and delivery suite, the midwifery-led unit, theatres, and the postnatal ward, concluding her career in antenatal care. She expressed that she will most miss the people but intends to stay connected with her former colleagues.
