MaggOTS Rain Down on NSW Hospital Patients
20 Jan
Summary
- MaggOTS fell from ceiling vents onto patients at a NSW hospital.
- Hospital wards were closed, and surgeries were cancelled due to mould.
- Cancer patients were relocated from the affected unit.

Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital is grappling with a severe mould infestation that led to maggots falling onto patients. The distressing incident occurred on Monday, forcing the closure of the hospital's 16-bed haematology unit and a four-bed room. Operations were significantly disrupted, with planned surgeries cancelled and cancer patients needing to be moved.
Patients were relocated to the general medicine ward or other hospitals. A spokeswoman for Calvary acknowledged the severe impact of these disruptions on patients, their families, and hospital staff. The organisation, operating the hospital under a public-private agreement, is addressing the extensive mould problem.
