NSW Hospitals Overwhelmed: 1 in 10 Patients Wait Over 24 Hours
7 Feb
Summary
- One in ten emergency patients in NSW wait over a day for hospital beds.
- Health Minister cites aged care discharge issues as a major factor.
- Around 1100 elderly patients are awaiting discharge from NSW hospitals.

New South Wales hospitals are struggling to meet performance targets, with one in every ten emergency patients requiring a hospital bed waiting longer than a full day for admission. This situation places significant strain on the public health system.
Health Minister Ryan Park has highlighted that resolving this critical issue depends on federal government intervention. Specifically, he requires assistance to facilitate the discharge of around 1100 elderly patients currently occupying acute hospital beds. These patients require placement in suitable aged care facilities or NDIS-supported environments to free up vital hospital capacity.
