Novo Nordisk Tests Lower Wegovy Doses

Summary
- Novo Nordisk began a late-stage trial for lower Wegovy doses.
- The OASIS-5 study aims to assess weight reduction efficacy.
- Competition is rising in the multi-billion dollar obesity drug market.

Novo Nordisk has launched the OASIS-5 study to explore the effectiveness of reduced dosages for its oral weight-loss medication, Wegovy. This late-stage clinical trial, initiated earlier this month and scheduled to conclude in 2028, seeks to determine if lower doses of semaglutide can still yield significant weight reduction.
The trial involves 450 adults with obesity or related health issues who have previously struggled with weight loss. It will compare two undisclosed lower strengths of the oral semaglutide against a placebo over 60 weeks.
This development occurs as Novo Nordisk faces escalating competition from rivals like Eli Lilly in the rapidly expanding obesity drug market, which is anticipated to surpass $100 billion by 2030. The company's CEO noted that patients often self-adjust dosages, suggesting a demand for benefits beyond mere weight loss.
This research follows previous findings where Wegovy demonstrated a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors in the Phase III OASIS 4 trial, which concluded in November 2025. The current study excludes patients with diabetes or recent significant weight changes.
