A woman from South Wales has shared her harrowing experience of a decade-long addiction to an over-the-counter decongestant nasal spray. Beginning at age 18, she used the spray for instant relief from cold symptoms but quickly escalated its use far beyond recommended limits. The addiction cost her approximately $2,000 and trapped her in a "vicious cycle."
She developed rebound congestion, a condition where excessive use of nasal sprays causes nasal passages to swell, making it difficult to breathe without them. This led her to use the spray up to 15 times daily, even when not suffering from a cold. The peak of her addiction occurred during a family holiday in Greece in July 2022, where she used two full bottles in 11 days.
Reaching a breaking point, she quit cold turkey in August 2023. After a month of struggle, she could finally breathe unmedicated through both nostrils. Now three years spray-free, she aims to warn others about the potential dangers of easily accessible over-the-counter medications and the severity of rebound congestion.
