3 Mar
Summary
- Nearly 80 people fell ill with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis on a cruise.
- Stool samples confirmed norovirus in seven patients aboard the ship.
- Enhanced sanitation was implemented as a precautionary measure.

Hong Kong health authorities are investigating a suspected norovirus outbreak that affected nearly 80 people on a Holland America Line cruise ship. The Westerdam vessel, which departed from Yokohama, Japan, on February 15, had 65 guests and 11 crew members report symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
Stool samples from seven patients aboard the ship tested positive for norovirus, with further testing underway by the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch. Holland America Line confirmed that a number of guests experienced gastrointestinal illness during the ship's previous voyage, describing the cases as mostly mild and quickly resolving.
In response, the cruise line implemented enhanced sanitation procedures and conducted additional deep cleaning. This situation highlights concerns about norovirus activity, which has been rising in tourist destinations like Japan and Korea since late last year. Health officials are advising passengers and operators to prioritize hygiene to prevent further spread.
