Noida Air Quality Plummets, Health Crisis Looms
3 Nov
Summary
- Respiratory illnesses and allergies surge due to smog.
- Noida's AQI rapidly increased from 58 to over 320.
- Doctors advise masks, air purifiers, and vaccinations.
A sudden spike in smog and a sharp decline in air quality have led to a surge in respiratory and seasonal health complaints across the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly in Noida. Doctors have observed a significant increase in patients presenting with symptoms such as persistent headaches, coughs, throat irritation, nasal congestion, allergies, wheezing, and breathlessness. Even individuals without a history of respiratory issues are experiencing these symptoms.
The air quality in Noida deteriorated rapidly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing from 58 to over 320 within a few days. This alarming rise in pollution, combined with falling temperatures, has made residents more susceptible to respiratory infections. Pulmonologists are noting a rise in cases of allergic airway diseases, asthma exacerbations, and general respiratory discomfort.
Medical experts have also flagged concerning cases of pneumonia among young people, some of whom have progressed to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). While pollution isn't the sole cause, exposure to particulate matter weakens lung defenses. Doctors recommend tracking AQI, avoiding outdoor exercise during high pollution, wearing N95 masks, using HEPA air purifiers, and ensuring homes are well-ventilated. Vaccinations and adherence to prescribed medications are also advised.
