Summary

- Potential exposure occurred at Las Cruces U.S. District Court building.
- New Mexico has recorded 16 measles cases this year.

A federal detainee held at the Luna County Detention Center has been diagnosed with measles, resulting in 16 reported cases in New Mexico this year. Health officials have identified the U.S. District Court building in Las Cruces as a potential exposure site. The building, located at 100 N. Church St., may have had individuals exposed between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 27.
The New Mexico Department of Health is actively collaborating with court administrative staff to contact and inform employees and others who might have been exposed. The goal is to prevent further infections. Measles symptoms typically begin with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash.
Individuals experiencing symptoms and concerned about exposure are urged to call the Department of Health Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE. Nurses are available for guidance in both English and Spanish. Previously, 15 measles cases were linked to three county detention centers, primarily involving federal detainees. The Department of Health strongly recommends the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination as the most effective protection.
