N.L. Health Facilities Reinstate Mask Mandate
4 Nov
Summary
- Masks are mandatory again in N.L. health-care facilities starting Nov. 4.
- The mandate is a response to rising respiratory illnesses and outbreaks.
- The requirement is expected to remain in effect until March 31, 2027.
Masks are set to become mandatory again in Newfoundland and Labrador health-care facilities, with the new rule taking effect at 8 A.M. on November 4.
This measure is being implemented by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) in response to a notable increase in respiratory illnesses and outbreaks within their facilities.
The decision considers current epidemiological data, vaccination rates, and the health authority's capacity to manage care during this period of heightened respiratory illness.
As of November 4, all individuals within healthcare settings, including staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors, will be required to wear masks in all areas where care is provided.
This mask requirement will apply to all inpatient units, ambulatory care settings, and long-term care facilities. The health authority has indicated that this mandate will be subject to review and is projected to conclude by March 31, 2027.
Earlier in October, the province's chief medical officer of health advised residents to get vaccinated against the flu due to a higher than usual number of confirmed influenza cases. A similar mask mandate was in place at N.L. health facilities last year, which was lifted on April 1, 2026.
