AI Analyzes DNA Fragments for Pregnancy Risk
25 Sep
Summary
- Cell-free DNA fragment patterns can predict preterm birth risk.
- Routine first-trimester NIPT data may reveal early pregnancy risks.
- AI analysis of DNA fragment ends shows high prediction accuracy.
A recent study published in AJOG Global Reports indicates that cell-free DNA fragmentomic patterns may predict spontaneous preterm birth. Gene Solutions' research suggests that data from routine first-trimester non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) could be used for earlier pregnancy-risk assessment.
The study, titled "First-Trimester Non-Invasive Prediction of Preterm Birth Using Cell-Free DNA Fragmentomics," explored whether existing NIPT sequencing data could signal preterm birth risk. By analyzing DNA fragment lengths and molecular ends using AI, researchers found distinct patterns, or 'end motifs,' linked to preterm birth outcomes.
Preliminary validation of the AI-driven model demonstrated an AUC of 0.970, with 94% sensitivity at over 90% specificity. This analysis uses existing NIPT data without requiring additional blood draws or sequencing. Gene Solutions is initiating prospective studies in Vietnam and India to validate these findings across diverse populations.
This research is part of a broader trend in international prenatal cfDNA studies. Findings suggest that cell-free DNA may offer insights into pregnancy biology beyond fetal chromosomal status, potentially transforming prenatal care and pregnancy intelligence.
