A criminal investigation has been opened by Russian authorities following the deaths of nine infants at a Siberian maternity hospital. The tragic events unfolded at Maternity Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk during the recent New Year holidays. Officials confirmed a case has been initiated on charges of causing death by negligence.
The local health ministry stated that most of the deceased babies were premature and had been battling severe intrauterine infections. Between December 1 and January 11, 234 children were born at the hospital, with 17 initially in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Sadly, nine of these infants did not survive.
In response to the tragedy, the hospital's head doctor has been suspended. The speaker for Russia's upper house of parliament highlighted the incident as a significant loss and a tragedy for the state, emphasizing the need for federal-level conclusions to prevent future occurrences and support the nation's declining birth rate.
