Nicotine Pouches: Oral Health Unknowns
13 Apr
Summary
- New study examines nicotine pouch effects on oral health.
- Long-term impacts of pouches remain largely unknown.
- Experts seek to inform future health guidance.

A pioneering study is underway to investigate the oral health implications of nicotine pouch usage. Dental experts from The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University are leading the research, funded by the Oral and Dental Research Trust and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research. This initiative is driven by the growing popularity of nicotine pouches as an alternative to traditional smoking and vaping.
Despite their tobacco-free nature, a significant gap exists in robust, independent research concerning their long-term effects on oral health. The study, coordinated by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Dental Research Facility, will involve anonymous online surveys for users and potential clinical tests, including biopsies, for a subset of participants. Dentists can also contribute by reporting observed changes in patients using these products.
