NHS Fat Jabs: Two Years Up, What Now?
16 Sep
Summary
- NHS Wegovy prescriptions are limited to two years, risking weight regain.
- Patients may regain 60% of lost weight within a year after stopping jabs.
- New pills like Foundayo and Wegovy pill are private and awaiting NICE approval.

Brits prescribed weight-loss jabs like Wegovy on the NHS may soon face a significant challenge as their two-year treatment window closes. University of Cambridge research indicates that patients typically regain about 60% of their lost weight within a year of discontinuing these medications, raising concerns about a potential 'weight gain timebomb'.
Patients are now being informed that their subsidized treatment is ending. After this period, continuing with Wegovy would require private payment, costing approximately £240 monthly. While the Mounjaro jab has no stated prescription limit, its NHS availability is severely restricted, with an estimated 12-year wait for all eligible individuals.
New pill forms of orforglipron (Foundayo) and Wegovy are available in the UK, mimicking the appetite-suppressing effects of the jabs. However, these are currently only accessible privately, pending approval from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for NHS funding, with potential availability in early 2027 for Foundayo.
Eligibility for NHS Wegovy generally requires a BMI of at least 35 with one comorbidity, or a BMI of 27 with established heart disease. Mounjaro prescriptions are for those with a BMI of 40 or higher and four weight-related conditions, or equivalent for minority ethnic backgrounds. Some patients can also access Wegovy on the NHS for heart conditions, with a lower BMI threshold of 27 if they have pre-existing heart issues.
Experts estimate that only a fraction of eligible individuals will receive these treatments through the NHS by 2028. If GPs refuse a prescription, patients may seek referrals to specialist weight management services. Concerns persist regarding the safety of purchasing weight-loss injections online due to potential severe side effects and fraudulent sellers, prompting stricter regulations for pharmacies to verify patient eligibility.
