An NHS trust is facing prosecution for the deaths of two children who had sepsis. Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSE), which operates Broomfield Hospital in Essex, has been charged with three offenses. These charges stem from the deaths of three-year-old Zadie Ajetunmobi in November 2022 and two-year-old Selina Samarina in April 2024. Court documents reveal that care and treatment were allegedly not provided in a safe manner to the young girls.
Zadie died within ten hours of arriving at the hospital on November 10, 2022, after suffering a cardiac arrest. A post-mortem confirmed her death was due to sepsis complications, noting a significant delay in administering potentially life-saving antibiotics. Selina was initially sent home from Broomfield Hospital on April 7, 2024, with sepsis symptoms, but died two days later after being readmitted. An inquest heard that a doctor of appropriate seniority was not available for two-and-a-half hours. The trust is due to appear before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in December.
