Whistleblowers Expose Care Failures at NHS Trust
19 Aug
Summary
- Patients reportedly died or were harmed due to care failures.
- Cancer diagnoses were delayed, and invasive treatments were necessitated.
- Staff claim safety reports are suppressed or ignored by management.

Patient harm and deaths are alleged at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust due to significant care failures. Whistleblowers claim patients have died during surgery without thorough investigation, and others experienced delayed cancer diagnoses. Some patients reportedly suffered in overcrowded A&E corridors or underwent unnecessary invasive treatments because of delayed care.
Staff members have voiced concerns, alleging they are discouraged from reporting safety issues. They also claim that accounts of serious harm and death are frequently not investigated properly. These issues have been ongoing for years, with former staff describing the trust's approach to patient safety as 'toxic'.
The trust, which serves over a million patients across Greater Manchester, has faced scrutiny before. An earlier review of its gynaecology department examined hundreds of women's care due to administrative delays linked to a consultant, impacting cancer diagnoses. The trust is now undergoing another independent review of its gynaecology surgeries.
In response, the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust stated it has established processes for learning from events and making improvements. It highlighted efforts to involve more clinicians in leadership and decision-making roles, acknowledging challenges and committing to addressing staff concerns and prioritizing learning from incidents.
