On November 11th, 2025, the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) collaborated with Sikh community leaders to host a health outreach event at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara and Sikh Cultural Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. The pilot initiative aimed to address persistent health inequalities faced by the Sikh population in the region.
During the event, UHNM representatives promoted NHS cancer screening programs for bowel, breast, lung, and cervical cancer. Visitors also had the opportunity to speak directly with healthcare professionals about symptoms, early detection, and available support services. Additionally, the event provided guidance on maintaining healthy diets, exercise routines, and mental wellbeing.
Sadaff Butt, an organizational development consultant at UHNM, described the event as a positive step in bridging communication gaps and improving health literacy within the South Asian community. She noted that cultural barriers and technological unfamiliarity often hinder access to vital NHS resources. By hosting the outreach at the gurdwara, the trust aimed to create a welcoming and familiar environment for the Sikh community.
The event was well-received, with many attendees expressing gratitude for the accessible information and personalized support. UHNM plans to replicate similar initiatives at local mosques, temples, and other community settings to further address health disparities across the region.
